- (continued from previous page)They had just things in order when the people began to flock in and it was not long until a boy ran in with the news that Fr Owen was coming up the boreen. The people were all on their feet as the priest entered the kitchen and when the religious ceremonies of the morning were over breakfast was served but Mary kept the secret of how they got wine to herself because she was afraid that if either priest or people heard it they might be afraid to drink it or have anything to do with it. Indeed Mary Ballasty had a hard day trying to hide her feelings because the wine was constantly coming before her mind and she regretted now that she or John had not the presence of mind to have opened a bottle and tasted it before she offered it to anyone else but she was late now and her only consolation she had was to remember an old saying her mother used to use "It's time enough to bid the devil good morrow when you meet him."
A happy company of priest and his people sat round the table in Mary Ballasty's room for dinner that day joking and laughing and Mary tried as best she could and well she did it to make them all believe that she was proud to have them all.
