  1. I have heard this story from William Kiernan of Leitrim aged over 80 years of age.
    Peter Kiernan of Leitrim, not a brother of John mentioned in the last chapter, but he was a near relation, as all the families in Leitrim at that time were Kiernans, and all the one clan.
    Peter was in the Insurgent army and fought under John at the battle of Granard.
    He was on "the run" but he was not so fortunate as his friend John.
    He wa captured by the soldiers, in a house where he got shelter for the night, in Co Cavan.
    The Military had a camp at Cloncovet in Co Cavan, bordering the townland of Leitrim in Co Longford.
    The Military Camp was beside a protestant house named Trys, their descendants are only gone out of the place about 20 years ago and in recent times, the family were respected by their Catholic neighbours and were always titled "a good sort of protestants." Their place is now owned by a man called Mr James McCabe.
    Peter was tried by the Military at the camp and of course the usual sentence of death by hanging was passed.
    He was to be hanged next morning and the Scaffold
