Long ago the people did not wear boots until they were twelve or thirteen years of age but at the present time the children wear boots as soon as they are able to walk. They wore clogs with wooden soles and some people wear them now. It is very easy to slip on ice with clogs. Long ago the people put hay or red flannel into the clogs to keep their feet warm. The children go barefoot to school in summer but not in winter. In old times the women went barefoot in summer. There are three shoemakers in the district. There are not as many shoemakers now as there were in olden times because at present the people buy all the boots readymade but long ago they got them made with the shoemakers. They used to call them "brogues".
There was never a tanyard in the district but the nearest place that leather was ever tanned is Great Water Street Longford.
When people wash their feet at night it is right to throw out the water as it is said that if anyone is out of the house they will go astray.
