This is the sort of local spade. Long ago the blacksmith used to make "loys". The "loy" is an instrument nearly like a spade. They are not made now. The potatoes are cut into scalps in preparation for sowing. An eye has to be left in each piece because it is out of these eyes that the stalks grow. The local people help one another in sowing the potatoes by lending their ploughs, harrows or horses to each other. The growing crop is kept free from weeds during the summer months.
