    For a cold a hot foot bath with mustard in it was taken immediately before getting into bed, and a drink of hot punch was taken to promote perspiration
    For Sore Throat Common salt was roasted on the pan and then put into the stocking the person is then wearing and put round the neck of the patient when in bed. Two applications or so were supposed to effect a cure.
    Ointment from Herbs.
    Some people made burnt ointment to be applied to sores. They obtained herbs called "long tongue" and unsalted butter. The butter was melted in an iron pan and mixed with the herbs. These were then boiled, and the liquid resulting, poured into jars to cool. When cool, the ointment was thick + green.
