- The largest size cow-houses contained about twelve cows. They were tied to a ring which was around the post. There was a chain fastened to the ring and the chain was tied around the cows neck. The floors were paved. The bedding consisted of rushes and dry furze. The furze was got on hills. The furze grows in dry places. The rushes were got in bogs or in wet places. The houses were cleaned out every day and the manure was put into a large heap and allowed to rot. After about a year it was drawn out and put on the crops or on the grass.
