- The fat of a pig was put into a pot of boiling water and boiled until the fat was dissolved. In the meantime the wick was prepared. Four threads of cotton doubled were required for each candle a loop was put on one end. A sally rod was put through the loops of twelve of these wicks. Five or six of these hanks were hung on chairs placed back to back. When the tallow was ready each hank was dipped separately and allowed to harden. This process was repeated until all the tallow was used up.
