- Mona Incha means island in the bog also called Holy Island a place of Religious retreat. Very old place - there is no record of it in Church History owing to its age.
Carrigan ascribes its foundation to St Canice of Aghaboe, Ossory. 600 AD.
O'Hanlon ascribes its origin to St Cronan of Roscrea. Probably by neither but by St Kieran, Offaly.
St Cronan lived in it, he had a number of monks with him.
The monastery was supressed by a band of Cromwellian soldiers.
The soldiers, in order to gain access to the island had to procure boats, some boats belonging to the monks were moored along the shore of the lake, they took these and on being advised by a woman whose house was close to the monastery as to the best part on which to land they proceeded. The monks saw their approach and made off in boats, in an opposite direction to that of the soldiers' approach, but, before doing so they threw the sacred vessels into the water. The monks were pursued by the soldiers and hanged in a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
