In former times shops were never opened on Sunday, but a woman by the name of Eliza Carty used come from Thurles with a cart and horse. She set up a stall on the square just outside the chapel gates. She used sell apples, oranges, gingerbread and currants and gooseberries when in season. "Coring"[?] was carried on among the farmers. This meant that during a busy season one farmer helped another and that farmer returned the labour in some other way.
