Long ago Hurling and football matches were played differently to the way they are played now. These games were played between two parishes, and twenty one men played on each side. These men did not wear togs but played in their own clothes.
The ball that was used for hurling was made of corks and thread. An old stocking was ripped to make it. Then the thread was wound around the corks. When this was finished the ball was sewn with a packing needle.
There were no goal posts used in olden times. Which ever team got the ball to their own townsland first, won the game. Ash was the timber used for hurleys. A player who wanted a hurley should make it himself.
