The trade has been also handed down to Mr Allen from his ancestors, who were well-known blacksmiths, in the district south west of this village.
A special coal, called Swiss coal is used in the forge. It is believed, that the water used for cooling the red hot iron, contains a cure for warts and is also good for fowl.
Smiths have always been looked upon as very strong men. Mr. Scannell - the blacksmith - is a very strong man, but Mr. Allen is very slightly built, but may be quite as able as Mr. Scannell.
Children going home from school often visit the forge and love to watch the sparks fly in the air, when he hammers the red hot iron on the anvil.
Men, generally unemployed, congregate in the forge during in-clement weather, reading the daily paper or discussing the latest news.- Bailitheoir
