  1. (continued from previous page)
    The lofty trees spread all around
    Or bend in silence to the ground
    Where the loveliest flowers are found,
    The joy of every lover;
    O'er the carpet of the leaves
    The wind at even sweetly grieves,
    And young Fancy ever weaves
    Its spell around the rover.
    I may wander far and wide,
    Where mountains soar and rivers glide,
    yet I'll turn with joy and pride
    To this dell of splendour.
    Dear friends may smile no more on me,
    Yet this Eden I will see
    In the light of memory
    Enchanting, bright and tender.
