   These crosses were worn going to school until the 25th March and there used to be much jealousy amongst girls about them.

   Little boys used to wear a circular piece of paper divided into four parts - each part coloured. It was like this (sketch). Sometimes I saw little lads wearing this kind, (sketch) each arm of the Cross a different colour, blue or red or green or yellow. The blue was got from the blue bag, the red was red ink and I often knew it to be blood. Poorer children who never saw or even heard of red ink, pricked their fingers and smeared the drop of blood on the arm of the Cross. The yellow was the yoke of the egg (Though they would be plentiful at that time of the year, one egg might have to do a townland of garsoons
