and so eager was he in the pursuit of learning that once on the occasion of a heavy fall of snow he prayed that the snow might continue to block his hut until he had completed his beloved psalter.
He founded twelve churches before he went to live the life of a hermit in lone Gougane Barra, from whose lake a salmon was brought to him every morning.
At the bidding of an angel he left his hermitage to found a church in Cluan, variously identified with Kilclooney, Co, Cork, and Clonenagh, near Mountrath, and on the occasion of a miraculous occurence he turned homewards towards Corcach Mor, or the "Great Marsh," now the City of Cork.
A miracle accompanied Finbarr's consecration, and this man of God, who never saw any one in want whom he did not relieve, built up "a spiritual edifice wrought by the word and toil through the Holy Spirit." He died suddenly by the Cross of Cluan while paying a visit and his remains were brought to the city by the Lee.
A saint in a vision one day saw "a golden ladder near the tomb of the man of God to conduct souls to the Kingdom of Heaven." The Ireland of Finbarr is the Ireland of our dreams.
