  1. Potatoes are grown in this district. There is about a quarter of an acre sown by potatoes each year. The farmer prepares the ground by ploughing it and then he spreads manure on it. It is in drills they are sown in this district. A plough is nearly always used making them. There are no wooden ploughs used now. The spade is always bought in the shop. The potatoes are cut into sgionllans with an eye in each. The local people help one another in sowing the potatoes. They plough the ground with them or put in the potatoes with them. After a few months they are sprayed and after a few months more, about August they are sprayed again. In October they are dug up. The women and the children usually pick the potatoes. The potatoes are stored in pits then. The names given to the various kinds of potatoes are Aran Banners, Kerr Pinks, Golden Wonders, Up-to-Dates, Champions, Epicures, British Queens and Irish Queens. The Aran Banners are usually given to the cattle because they are too wet for eating. The other kinds are kept for food.
