    they caught in abundance in the season and they also dredged up oar-weed from the bottom of the sea, cutting it with curved knives attached to long poles. This weed and sea sand they brought to Bantry and sold for manure. When the Ranties settled down here is unknown, but they lived contented and happy for many generations, until the visitation of cholera in 1831, which caused fearful ravages amongst these poor people, and eventually swept them away. It is said that when the French fleet cast anchor in Bantry Bay December 14th 1796 Colonel White, afterwards Lord Bantry, marshalled the women of this tribe, with their red cloaks and caps on Hungry Hill, which had the appearance from the ships of a regiment of soldiers prepared to show battle. This threatened invasion was one of the most historic events
