2. The Big Wind of 1839 and the Frost of 1895

   The strongest storm ever recorded occurred in the Winter of 1839 known as the big wind. The following is an account of it given to me by my father.

   This terrific storm raged on the eleventh day of January 1839. It began at nine oclock on a moonlight night. In the early part of the night the clouds were all of a dark red colour and they moved across the sky like lightning. At the start it was so violent but gradually it became worse and at about ten oclock there was not a rick of hay in the district that was not blown away for miles. Many people suffered severe losses as their cattle sheep and horses were killed when the
