- Most marriages take place in this district during Shrove.
Matches are made and money is given as dowry, the settlement being made at a solicitor's before the wedding.
Monday, Wednesday & Friday are considered unlucky for marriages, also the months of May and November.
In this district (in the town of Bantry) if an eligible person is not married, small boys tie a collection of old buckets etc together on a string and drag them up and down before that person's house - "Sending the girl to the Skelligs" they call it.
After the marriage in the Church, the people drive to the bride's house, where a feast is held.
In the evg there is usually a dance and plenty of drink if the wedding feast is far out in the country.- Bailitheoir
