About ninety years ago there lived in Céim an tSriongáin a man named Gilman, he was a magistrate and he had a gallows erected on a tree which is now known as the "middle tree" where people were hanged for small crimes, he was also Loyds's agent and he kept a boat and crew of his own to board any ship that came into the harbour. One stormy day he went out to board a ship which had anchored off Frenchman's Point and as he jumped on a rope ladder which was fixed on the side of the ship he ordered the men to pull him up but as they were not doing it quick enough he used some vulgar language with the result that the men cut the ladder and he fell into the sea and was drowned.
    It happened before that that he had sentenced a man to be hanged for stealing a sheep, the man ran away but when his friends heard of Gilman's death they followed him on horse back and overtook near Glengarrif and told him the good news and
