    built there was a Hospital and a Graveyard long ago. There is a beautiful Abbey which was built by a King of Connaught in the 13th century. Monks lived there until Cromwell came to Ireland and drove them out. There was also a monastry built by St. Coman who is Patron of Roscommon where the Protestant Church now stands.
    There is a place about a quarter of a mile outside Roscommon called Essex Lawn which was given to Essex by Queen Elizabeth and is called Essex Lawn to the Present Day.
