   at once. She asked what was wrong and was told the fairies would steal a baby if tears were let fall on the baby's face. A neighbour said she would get some ferns which if put in the cot would keep the fairies away. Nancy accompanied her to the door but when she returned there was no baby left. An old Piper seeing her distress gave her a kind of crucifix and told her to go to a Fort near by and she would find her baby. Full of confidence she made her way to the Fort though not without difficulties and there a very gay scene met her eyes. Little Fairies boys and girls all dressed in bright colours and all dancing near where she stood were heaps
