  1. The 'Big Wind' of 1839 or the "Big Wind of Belanagare" as it is called locally owing to the fact that the Belanagare fair was to have been held on the next day. There are no stories of definite happenings to any particular people to be heard now but many stories of the general destruction that resulted from the storm,- such as thatch lifted from houses, livestock killed by falling trees etc. It is said also that the people in building houses for some years after the "Big Wind" chose a hollow in the ground as a site.
It is also told that on the night of the "Big Wind" herds who were out looking after their sheep on the hill of Carns (Carnfree- the coronation place of the Connaught kings, about 11/2 miles W of Tulsk) were wet through with salt spray which must have been carried on the wind for over thirty five to forty miles.
