At last they came to a very high hill and looking up from the bottom it seemed to rise abruptly from the ground.
'I think we had better get off'' said Jack, 'no need said Pat, ''I have often climbed it before''. So off the pair started afresh.
It was a very sultry day and before very long beads of perspiration stood out on the faces of the cyclers. Pat, who had often cycled the hill before said gaspingly to Jack, that some of the bad spirits must be keeping them back, but but poor Jack was too much in-earnest at his work to answer.
After spending the worst half.hour of their lives our pair at last reached the top. They threw themselves exhaustedly on the cool, green grass and for some moments neither spoke.
Pat then said ''do you know Jack that I think I must have had a night.mare? No, you were never more awake in your life'' said Jack as he tenderly bathed his swollen feet in a passing stream. ''Well I wouldn't do it again for all the money in Ireland,, said Pat; and said Jack ''If I had not kept the brake on we would have gone backwards.''
