  1. Wm. Whelan's grandfather had the forge opposite the school. The old forges had mud walls and were roofed with furze & that is why there is no trace of them now.
It is said that after the Smith has cooled the iron in the water, that he gains more strength by dipping his hands in it. This is the reason. One day as Our Blessed Lady was going along the road, and she lost the brooch which fastened her cloak. She met a cow-boy and asked to get her a thorn to fasten her cloak and he said he hadn't time. At last she came to a forge and there she asked the smith for something to fasten her cloak. The smith took a coin from his pocket and made it into a lovely brooch and gave it to Our Lady. She thanked him and gave him her blessing. It is said that the smith who washes his hands in the water in which he has cooled his irons finds himself refreshed and made stronger.
