the raw potatoe. If food is scarce especially in frosty weather, having failed to take small pieces out of the raw potatoes it swallows it whole If the size has been properly regulated the edges of the potatoe will have so irritated the bird's throat as to caus it to become swollen. Then the potatoe is finally swallowed it cannot easily be removed through the throat again when the bird pulls on the cord and consequently the bird is caught. it is sometimes possible to choke the bird without having the cord attached. Only in frosty weather when standing water becomes frozen and food gets very scarce is this bird trap very effective.
