  1. Local Fairs.
    The local fairs are held in Mountrath, Roscrea, Ballinakill, Abbeyleix, Portarlington, Maryborough and Mountmellick. All the local fairs are held in towns. They often buy cattle from farmers in the country.
    There were fairs held in Castletown but it is now dis-continued. The buyers failed to attend them. The town fairs are held in the streets and in fair greens.
    At certain fairs toll is paid on animals sold. It is paid to a fair committee at the note of threepence per head. Luck money is given to the buyer. It is so called luck penny. It is calculated according to price of the animal.
    The parties concerned show their agreement by striking hands. The animal is marked with mud or it is saddled.
