- There was a hedge-school in Castlecuffe, some place, near where the present school house is. Here the pupils were taught, Irish, English, Arithmetic, Writing and some other subjects.There was another hedge-school in Scaroon, at a place called Brophey's.There is a big hole in the side of a hill, where the school was carried on. It is now covered with furze.Each child had to bring a sod of turf every morning to make a fire. The place, where it was, is called the "Old school house". Hedge masters also taught in barns during the Winter months. They selected a different district every year.
