- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Lea Castle.Lea castle is midway between Portarlington and Monasterevan. This is a very ancient building and is a ruin now. The remains of a grave yard are in the castle grounds. This castle was built by an Anglo Norman, named O'Dempsey, who arrived in Ireland about the same time as Strongbow. This castle guarded the Norman frontier on this side of Leix. Some years later, the O'Moore of Dunamase attacked and partly destroyed the castle. It stands on the south bank of the Barrow and an ancient name of it was the "Castle of the Island", for the water almost surrounded it. It was three stories high with round towers on the top. In the reign of Charles 11, a baronet, named Lord Arlington was granted possession of the castle. he re-named it Portarlington, meaning the port of Arlington, because there was a small quay on the Barrow. French and German families settled on the land and the church and the street today in Portarlington is knows as the French church and French church street.
