- The Round Tower of Kildare.The Round tower is situated in the grounds of St. Brigid's Cathedral. It is about one thousand years old and it is one of the twenty perfect towers of Ireland. It is one hundred feet high and the walls are six feet wide. In olden times it was used as a place of safety for the people in the monasteries and the sacred vessels were stored there, when they were attacked by the Danes. When the enemy was coming,the people used to go up the tower and pull the ladder up after them,so that no person could get near them.There are a great number of holes round the top of the tower and the people used to shoot arrows at the enemy through these holes. A man named Mr. Brown lives in a cottage at the church gate and if one pays sixpence to him, he allows one to climb up to the top of it, to view the country round about.Florence Rowlette 25 ad
