  1. Before Cromwell's time the old Court at Castletown was occupied by the Daltons - a branch of the Daltons of Bessborough.
    Cromwell gave it to one of his officers, Colonel Butler, commonly called Foxy Jack. After some time Colonel Butler was called to England, to be appointed Viceroy of India, so he let the Court to a Protestant clergyman, named Cox, who originally came from Coxtown in Cork, and was then acting as Dean of Callan.
