- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Usually a spade is used for digging the potatoes. When the potatoes are gathered the large ones are put into heaps and kept as seed for the following Spring. The smaller ones are also put into heaps, but they are used as food for the cattle and fowl. The potatoes are first covered with rushes, and then clay is tightly packed down on the rushes with a spade, to protect them from the frost. This is called "pitting" the potatoes.
