    A cake of hardbaked oaten bread used to be broken over the bride's head as she stepped on the threshold of the door of her future home.
    If she were lucky enough to get inside before her husband she would be boss for life but if he got inside first she had to obey.
    Wednesday is the favourite day for a marriage.
    "Monday for (riches) health,
    Tuesday " wealth,
    Wednesday the best day of all,
    Thursday for losses,
    Friday for crosses,
    and Saturday no luck atall."
