At midnight the soldiers came to Conmy's when their captain entered the house he saw the bed where Fr. Cowley had lain and he exclaimed with great anger, "The nest is here but the bird is gone."
Thereupon the soldiers left and came to "Nead." They tramped around Fr. Cowley's hiding place but they could not find him, at last they left. In the morning a few men dug a cave under the ground for him.
Fr. Cowley then went to hide there. Morning and evening people came to him with food.
Some days later he was found dead in the cave with his mass book in this hand and the stole about his neck.
Twenty years later a man named Neary found one of his sandals lost in the bog.
Father Cowley is buried on the right hand-side of the gate leading into Killanley old cemetery.- Bailitheoir
