It is believed that the Firbolgs built the fort. Many other similar mounds are found throughout the country. There is a belief that there are fairies on the fort and if a person falls on it, he never recovers. History tells us they may be the Tuatha Da Danaans who would not submit to the Milesians, who conquered Ireland but went to live under these mounds.
The last man to hold the fort was Tadhg O Regan. He was holding it for King James who was at that time fighting King William in 1691 at Limerick. Colonel Lambert came to Sligo to besiege the fort, but Tadhg was too strong for him, he beat him back. When he saw he could not get the fort from him he told him a lie. He said that King James' men lost at Limerick so Tadhg O Regan surrendered. He left the fort with honours of war. No one ever lives there after him until the Irish Civil War started.
