The people used to have to give the potatoes to pay the rent for the landlord. The people used to die in the ships going to America with the fever and they used only throw them into the sea. Many of them perished in the sea in the coffin ships. Between starvation and emigration the population of Ireland fell from over eight million to six million. Potato blight had come in 1845 and again in 1847 followed by famine and famine fever. It is said that the people had the potatoes dug in 1845 but that they were growing in 1847. The people died of hunger and want of food. Some people lived on turnips, seaweed and green grass while others lived on oats and barley.
