  1. The houses of long ago were thatched. The people used to thatch them with oaten straw.
Some of the chimneys were made of yellow clay and wattles. The clay was mixed first with water, hay ropes were made then and rolled in it. Afterwards four posts were put up for the four corners of the chimney, then rungs were put across them like in a ladder. The ropes were woven in and out in them then. It was plastered with yellow clay inside and outside then. The floors were also make with this yellow clay.
