- Woodbrook is a townland adjoining Newbridge or more correctly speaking Newgrove. It is on the west and about a mile from here - Killyan.
This Woodbrook was a farm in grass up to thirty years ago. Of course a few generations before that it was inhabited by a ruthless tyrant of a landlady - a Mrs. Jerrot (s0 pronounced) evicted it.
As was usual, in these cases a steward's house was erected on this farm. The present occupier of this house is Mannion who acted as a herd previous to the distribution by the Congested Districts Board. On this man's land and adjoining his premises was an old Castle.
It had all the appearances of a fortified place with turrets, battlements, enclosures & e.
It is said Granuaille lived in this castle, besides having another near Clifden in Connemara.
From this the queen went forth every day to inspect her herds, estates & co. Her mode of conveyance was not a motor car, but what my informant described as a "slide". That is a carriage on wheels of a semicircular shape, something of the make of our "swinging boats" used by travelling companions or enterprises. There wasn't an axle but it slid along the ground drawn(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
