- In older times the people tried to make their own rough kind of baskets as there was no one speciality appointed to do the job.
They made these baskets from straw or rushes and sometimes from rods if they could be found. They got a round strong piece of wood and around this they wove the straw or rushes.
When the baskets were made from rods they had to be boiled (for an hour) in hot water for an hour. Then they were woven round the strong piece of wood. As time went on certain men settled down to the work of basket making. Very soon they were expert at the job and so today we have the nicely patterned baskets which are so useful for many things.
In most country districts yet rods are cut and boiled for use in the repairing of baskets. Creels are still made locally and are used for carrying fish and for drawing turf.
