    floor, and a hole in the roof instead of a chimney. There is no one living in this district now who remembers the fire to be in the centre of the floor. The old floors were all made of blue clay. The clay was made to a thick sort of paste, which was then well tramped into the ground and afterwards smoothed. There are still some houses in this district with the thatched roof, the outshot beds, and the clay floors.
