  1. Some years ago it was believed that there were people with the evil eye who could overlook or as they called it "blink" anything belonging to you, especially cows and milk. There is a strange story told about a woman named Mrs Oliphant a grandmother to the present family of Oliphants who live in Castlefinn.
She churned and churned for days but the milk yielded no butter. One day as she was churning an old beggarman came to the door and asked her for a drink of the butter-milk. She gave him a drink of the milk and told him about how she could not get the milk to yield any butter. He said "my good woman you have an enemy who is doing this. The person I mean is a friend of your own. Go and pull some thatch out of the roof and burn it and you will have no more trouble." She did so and she always had plenty of butter after that.
