About thirty years ago a ‘sciog’ bush grew in the middle of a field belonging to Brian McCloskey of the townland of Mullins, in the barony of Banagh. This bush had been there for many years and as it grew higher and wider it became a great obstruction to the crops which the owner had growing in the field. One Spring however, when he was setting potatoes in this field he decided to cut it down. Accordingly, he came next morning, with a hatchet, but, living superstitious, he thought better of his resolve and did not interfere with the bush. Next day, on coming to continue his work in the field he found under the ‘sciog’ bush a pipe and a few ounces of tobacco. He believed that the fairies had left them there as a reward for his kindness and consideration towards them, and he never afterwards interfered with a “sciog” bush.
