   were from 6am to 6pm. It was in the year 1920 that the early hours were changed from 6am to 8am, because there were great hardships endured, starting without breakfast especially in the Winter. Breakfast was from 8.30am until 9.30am and some of the girls came from Leixlip which is over 2 miles from Lucan. The girls walked to and from their work. This meant that they who lived far away had to bring their breakfast and cook it in the Dining Hall. The 3rd of April 1930 was a very wild and wet day and a very sad one for the workers as one of the male workers met with a very tragic death. He was a foreman over scouring machines and it was part of his business to put on a belt on a machine for pressing. The belt was on a shaft over part of the river. When the pressing machine was not in use this belt was taken off to keep it from wearing. Five mins. before the poor man was killed he passed out to view the clock in the weaving shed to see was it the proper time 4.30 to put on this belt. "Oh!" he remarked to one of the weavers, "this evening seems to me to be very long". When word went round that he was hurt, all the machinery was stopped immediatley. Then the order was all workers were to go home. The weavers from the shed had to pass this very spot out and i will never forget seeing this poor mans
