  1. There was a great famine in the year 1846. That was the year that the potato crop failed. The people lived on potatoes up to that time. They had plenty of wheat but they did not make bread out of it. The people had nothing to eat only trying to eat grass and mettles by the road-side. Relief was given out when it was too late. Millions of people died of hunger and fever.
