house people ran short of drink and the day was very fine and the shop people began to charge for the spring water and from that day to this there is rain at Spancilhill fair.
There is also custom paid at the fair and the custom for the cattle is sixpence and for the sheep is threepence.Long ago there used also be earnest paid at the firs but nowadays i think it is not paid at all.The earnest was if a buyer bought a beast from a man he would have he would have to pay a pound or so to the man would have a right to his beast. There is also a luck penny paid at the fair.Long ago the people had many ways of making bargains.Once upon a time I heard a story.A man had a cow at the fair of Spacilhill fair and he was making a bargain with the buyer .The buyer would give him so much for his beast and the man would not aggree with the bargain and at last a wise man came on and he told the men never to sell cheap,he said sell dear and buy cheap and always have a fair at Spancilhill and from that to this there is a fair at Spancilhill and from that day to this there is a fair at Spancilhill .Long ago there used be two fairs held there but one of them was done away with.So ends my Béaloideas about Fairs.
