  1. A great famine occurred in Ireland in the beginning the year 1846 ,and it continued during 1846 and 1847 . The peoples potatoes blackened and it was called black '47 . A great many of them died in the roadsides and fields from hunger because they had nothing to eat. A story is told about a man who was found dead on the road to Ennis. The people held a postmortem on his remains and all the food they discovered in his stomach was one grain of wheat.
