- St Caimin is the patron saint of the parish of Whitegate, He came to Inischealtra in the first quarter of the 7th century from S. Galway.
He became a monk at this great school, was ordained & became the greatest scholar who ever lived & lectured there.
A round church called St Maimines, still stands in the island. The local people have no stories or legends about this great saint.
He is buried on the island.
The V. Rev M. Vaughan's new house in Mountshannon has been called after him & also the Whitegate Catholic Church is named St Caimins. No townland Etc. or no child has the Baptismal name of Caiminh.
The Saint's day is not observed as a holiday.
