    paid £2 an acre rent to Mr. Kirke of Keady.
    Mr. McKean wished his employees - Catholic and protestant to work on holydays. He said it cost too much to have the engines heated up after every holyday and too much time was lost. He proffered to build a chapel at Laragh but Canon McCluskey...then P.P. of Aughnamullen did not agree to this. Neither would he or his successor Canon McKenna allow the catholics of the parish to work on a holyday. The mills were then closed about 1880.
    In 1884-1885 a woollen factory was at Laragh but after about two years it was closed.
    A song was made by a local person part of which is:-
    "The first thing took my notice
    As I walked by Laragh Mill
    Was the spinning wheel going to the de'il
    And its lying idle still
    The men of Aughnamullen
    Their praises can't be told
    For they told the roaring Kean
