    to examine the structure of the bridge. Immediately they tried to cross the bridge, it gave way and those who were not drowned were slain in the battle by the Inniskillens. It is estimated that the Jacobites lost about 500 men, numerous horses, and much fighting material. If the bridge had not been sabotaged the Connought men would perhaps have made good their escape. Otherwise 500 Irishmen lost their lives because there was a spy willing to sell his country and kinsmen. This Fitzpatrick family has been nicknamed "Cut the Gad Fitzpatrick" and to this day, Ian informed, his descendants bear that nick-name, so deservadly applied to the Inniskillen spy.
