  1. The kinds of bread eaten long ago were wheaten bread, oaten bread, boxty bread and potato bread. The potato bread was made out of potatoes and rye made into flour. The flour was black and when the bread was baked it was black. The oaten bread was made with oatmeal and wet with warm water. The boxty bread was made out of raw potatoes and flour. The potatoes were grated with a small grater. Some of these graters were made locally but more of them were bought. Then when they were put into a muslin cloth and steamed. When it was strained it was mixed with flour and made into a cake or dumplings. Then they were in an oven or pot of hot water to bake.
    Most of the bread was made from corn and wheat grown locally. The corn, oats and wheat was ground locally. It was ground between two stones called grind stones. There is a grind stone beside Kill Church.
    In olden times the bread was not baked every day. There was enough baked on one day as would do for a week. This bread was baked on Monday evening. The mark that was put on the cake was a cross. The names of the baking vessels were an oven and a griddle.
    Mostly all the bread long ago was baked before the fire on a griddle. Nowadays some oaten bread is baked before supported by a griddle.
    On Halloween night there is potato bread, boxty and boxty dumplings made. On Shrove Tuesday night there are pancakes made. Shrove Tuesday night is also called pancake night. Another kind of bread made locally was barram bread. This was made out of boiled potatoes, soda, sugar, flour, baram and yeast. Then it was put aside in a pot to swell. When it was swelled it was
