  1. Adjacent to the ancient churchyard of Ardagh, Kingscourt, can be seen the scanty remains and foundations of Ardagh Castle.
    In early times it was a residence of Roger De Peppard, and was of large dimensions, one portion being connected with another by means of a subterranean passage.
    Subsequently it was used as a stronghold by the Irish forces, under Sir Henry Tichborne.
    Afterwards it fell into the hands of Cromwell, then of Janes II., after his retiral from Dundalk.
    In 1539, Ballyhoe Lake was the scene of an important engagement between the forces of the English of the Pale (under Lord Deputy Gray and Sir Edward Brereton) and the Northern Irish under O'Neill.
    A considerable portion of O'Neill's forces detached themselves from the main army and had occupied an advantageous position at Ballyhoe, in order to oppose the passage of the Lord Deputy's forces, which were waiting to attack the insurgents. After a desperate conflict, the English threw them into disorder, their Commander being killed. O'Neill's army retreated in dismay
